Correct Capital Welcomes Financial Advisor Jonathan Horman

Correct Capital Wealth Management is growing! In this episode of Capital Conversations, Ryan Potts sits down with our new financial advisor Jonathan Horman to talk about everything from family life and camping trips to career moves, entrepreneurship lessons, and why Correct Capital felt like the perfect professional "home."

Ryan Potts: Hey everyone. Welcome back to another Capital Conversation. My name is Ryan Potts and with me today I have Jonathan Horman, a new face to the team at Correct Capital Wealth Management here.

Today's actually an exciting episode, because we're gonna get to learn a little bit more about Jonathan. It'll be a lot more him and a lot less me, which I think is always a positive.

Let's get things started here. Jonathan, anything you wanna tell the audience as an introduction to yourself?

Jonathan Horman: Thanks, Ryan. I'm excited to be here.

This team has such a great reputation and I'm grateful for your warm welcome.

Ryan Potts: Awesome.

I think before we jump into work related things, I'd like to hear a little bit more about yourself from a personal side of things.

Tell me a little bit about yourself. Life outside of work. What does it look like?

Jonathan Horman: How much time do you got?

Ryan Potts: I think 10 to 15, but we'll figure it out.

Jonathan Horman: Absolutely. All right. I've been married to my amazing wife, Laura, for nine years now. Last week was my anniversary. We had a great time at dinner without the kids on Tuesday night.

We actually have three kids. Elijah is seven, Jonah's five, and Lana's two. So I have a lot on my plate, but I love it.

Ryan Potts: A very busy household for sure.

And I know, without getting too much information out to the public, you're in the middle of moving. How is that going?

Jonathan Horman: Oh boy. It's chaotic. But my wife and I are a good team, so we're handling it well.

Ryan Potts: Awesome. Awesome.

You've mentioned before that you guys are kind of an outdoors family, right?

Jonathan Horman: It’s definitely a part of what we do all the time, hanging outdoors.

Ryan Potts: Awesome. What are some of the activities that you guys are doing outside?

Jonathan Horman: I would say our favorite thing to do is to go on a long bike ride. We load up Lana and Jonah in a bike trailer, and Elijah is on a tandem bike behind my wife and I.

We live down in the city and we would ride all the way to Kirkwood across Grants Trail. It's a fun thing to do.

Ryan Potts: That's very exciting.

And I know you've talked about potentially in the future as your kids get older, maybe going camping or doing some type of backpacking. Is that kind of something you're into as well?

Jonathan Horman: Yeah, we actually tried that two weekends ago. But it was rainy and really cold, so we just did five and a half miles one day.

So I was really impressed by Jonah and Elijah. They didn't complain too much and they walked a very long distance for their age.

Ryan Potts: That's very exciting.

I also know, as we're speaking about kind of physical activity and being outside, one that you're definitely conscious about the way that you're working out and some of the cool things that you're doing there. So please spend some time, if you want to, talking about not just you're working out, but also I know you're involved with wrestling and helping coach a local team here in the St. Louis area.

Jonathan Horman: I spent a lot of time in my childhood wrestling, little league and high school, and I wrestled [in] college at Truman State.

I've been a coach at St. Mary's High School – I actually started at Cleveland High School many years ago as an assistant coach – but I've been at St. Mary's for about the last four years. Down in the city and helping that high school and the students there become better wrestlers and better men.

Ryan Potts: Is there anything that you try to help educate the young men on the wrestling team? How do you relate wrestling to maybe real life scenarios for them, or help them mature in their journey ahead?

Jonathan Horman: Wrestling is a tough sport, and life doesn't come easy. So just helping them stay focused, not giving up whenever things get hard.

That's really where my passion lies with them, giving up is not an option for me. And I don't want it to be an option for them either.

Ryan Potts: That's awesome. As someone that also played sports growing up, I think there's a lot of takeaways in life that you can learn at a young age from those things.

Transitioning from what you do outside of work and some of the ways that you're involved in the community, wrestling being the last thing we just spoke about, help me kind of transition into your career path.

Walk me through where you've been, what have you done, what are your experiences so far?

Jonathan Horman: Sure thing.

I started in banking right out of Truman State. I had a finance degree. I pretty quickly found myself at Wells Fargo Advisors working across roles and fixed income trading. Worked on a financial advising, internal sales desk. I took some time to get my MBA while I was working at Wells Fargo.

Then I moved into more financial planning focused roles. Doing investment analysis and financial plans, helping clients with retirement income projections and tax strategies.

I stepped out of the finance world for a bit. I ran my own construction business, several for several years. This experience gave me a ton of perspective about entrepreneurship, managing a team, navigating cash flow, and making tough decisions.

When I came back into financial advising, I really think I have a whole new appreciation for the needs of business owners and families just trying to juggle it all.

Ryan Potts: Being an entrepreneur and trying to help other entrepreneurs in this career path, what are some lessons you learned being in the field that translates to the way you work with clients today?

Jonathan Horman: Slowing down a bit, trying to take time with decisions and get that input from others is what I try to urge clients to do. You have to ask for help when you're running a business and sometimes that's hard. But, putting a process to actually getting help I think translates really well with financial planning.

It is a process. It takes work. Good decisions take time. Really well thought out decisions and planning for it.

Ryan Potts: The power of delegation was always one that I was taught. Being able to take others' advice and understanding that time is money. Being able to delegate and work with professionals in different areas of your life is so, so important.

I think it's cool you have that entrepreneurial background. A lot of our clients are entrepreneurs and you can kind of relate to their day to day outside of just the numbers and the finance. So that's really cool.

All right, so now you're at Correct Capital Wealth Management. You're a financial advisor on the team. You've been here a couple months now. It's getting close, it feels like at least.

What brought you here and what are you most excited for?

Jonathan Horman: Honestly, it was the people and the mission. I wanted to be a part of a team that really puts relationships first.

I love diving into the technical side of financial planning. But what drives me most is helping people make confident decisions with their money. Whether they're saving for retirement, passing on wealth, or trying to make sense of their business finances, Correct Capital just felt like the right fit for me professionally and personally.

It feels like a family around here. And I really enjoy that.

Ryan Potts: I would also have the same takeaways being here a little bit longer. It's really fun.

What are you most excited to help your clients with and as it pertains to financial advising and working with individuals?

Jonathan Horman: The best thing I can offer to clients is a level of comfortability and confidence that their financial future is taken care of, so they don't have to worry about where they're gonna have the paycheck in retirement. Or taxation, what do they do next April? I like to talk to them about that before it happens.

I think a proactive approach is really how I'm gonna work with customers here at Correct Capital.

Ryan Potts: Awesome.

I know we always preach touch points, you know, our IOU [Promise]. Always want to put our clients first, and part of that is being proactive and bringing them strategies that maybe they haven't thought of prior to meeting with us or working with us.

Before we wrap things up today, I just wanted to kind of leave it with you. Is there anything that we maybe missed or anything that we need to touch on more for the audience today? Just so they get to know Jonathan the best that they can?

Jonathan Horman: No, I think we've done a really good job of seeing who I am as a person. My family's very important to me. I love the outdoors. And I love what I do for clients.

Ryan Potts: Awesome.

It's been a real pleasure working with you so far. I'm looking forward to the future as well. Maybe to wrap up, just let the audience know what's the best way to get in contact with you. What are the different channels?

Jonathan Horman: You can always call the office at (314) 930-4015. Manasa I'm sure will transfer you over. You can also get access to a Calendly link after this podcast and set up some time. I'd love to connect and hear more about your story.

Ryan Potts: Awesome.
